Before you go

• Get PreCheck or Global Entry. The single biggest time-saver at security — here's which to get.
• Check in online + screenshot your boarding pass. Dead signal at the gate can't lock you out of a saved screenshot.
• Download the airport & airline apps for live gate changes — they update before the departure boards do.
• Measure your bag first. A gate-check fee is pure avoidable pain — confirm your carry-on size.

At security & the gate

• Bring an empty water bottle. Sail through with it empty, fill it free past security instead of paying $5 airside. (And know the liquid rules.)
• Wear slip-on shoes and easy layers. Less to peel off at the belt, and layers handle a freezing gate or a hot jet bridge.
• Pack your liquids bag on top. Grab-and-bin in one motion; no digging while the line piles up behind you.
• Find power away from the gate. The outlets at your gate are always taken — the next gate over is usually empty. Bring a power bank as backup.
• Turn left for the quieter restroom & shorter lines — most people herd right.

Layovers & delays

• Buy a lounge day pass. On a long layover, ~$40 for quiet seating, free food, drinks, fast Wi-Fi and real outlets is often worth it.
• If you're bumped, ask what you're owed. Volunteering to take a later flight can score travel credit — know the compensation before you say yes.
• Rebook by phone and in line at once when flights cancel — whichever reaches an agent first wins.
• Set a price alert before you rebook — same-day fares swing wildly during disruptions.
• Keep essentials in your personal item, not the overhead — meds, charger, a change of shirt — in case your bag and you get separated.
